Key Findings of Research on Mapping the Political Implications of the Matipada Execution for Indonesia’s International Relations (Indonesian)

This document is a press release or summary of the Key Research Findings published by the SETARA Institute on April 25, 2015, titled “Mapping the Political Implications of the Death Penalty on Indonesia’s International Relations”.

This brief report examines the impact of the Indonesian government’s policy on the death penalty on the country’s diplomatic standing, foreign policy leverage (soft power), and international relations. Specifically, this document highlights the irony that Indonesia will find it difficult to provide maximum defense and advocacy for Indonesian citizens (WNI) facing the death penalty abroad (such as in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia) because the Indonesian government itself still carries out executions domestically. As a solution, the SETARA Institute recommends that the government cancel planned executions, impose a moratorium in accordance with the UN Human Rights Council’s call, and review national legislation with a view toward abolishing the death penalty.
