Executive Summary of Performance Achievements and the Current Status of Business and Human Rights Advancement in Indonesia

This document is an Executive Summary (Executive Summary) published on September 13, 2023, titled “Performance Achievements and the Current Status of Business and Human Rights in Indonesia”. This summary report was compiled and published through a collaboration between SETARA Institute and Sustainable-Inclusive Governance Initiative (SIGI).

This 13-page summary evaluates the status of the adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in Indonesia over the past decade. This document highlights a global shift in trends from voluntary compliance toward legally binding obligations (mandatory compliance). The research findings indicate that Indonesia’s commitment remains at the “Normative Innovation” level, with a status ranging from “basic” to “improving.” The document also identifies areas requiring in-depth intervention, such as the development of the National Strategy on Business and Human Rights (Stranas BHAM) and the urgent need to establish Operational Level Grievance Mechanisms (Operational Level Grievance Mechanisms/OGMs) within companies to address the adverse impacts of business operations on workers and communities.
