Islamic Revivalism and the Institutionalization of Sharia

Summary
This document is a comprehensive study or thematic research report in e-book format, published in October 2019 under the title “Islamic Revivalism and the Institutionalization of Sharia”. This book, which is vi + 197 pages long, was written by Ismail Hasani, Marzi Afriko, Sudarto, and Atun Wardatun, and edited by Halili.
This research book provides an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon of contemporary religious revivalism (the Islamic revival) and its manifestation in the form of a push for the formalization or institutionalization of Sharia in Indonesia. Its primary focus is to analyze how revivalist movements that employ political channels and literalist da’wah often give rise to doctrinal exclusivism that excludes other groups. The critical analysis in this book highlights that the rigid institutionalization of Sharia law within a pluralistic society has the potential to erode constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and belief (KBB) and to create an ecosystem that contributes to the radicalization of religious views in the public sphere.
