From Radicalism to Terrorism (Indonesian)

This document is a book/report titled “From Radicalism to Terrorism: A Study of the Relationships and Transformations of Radical Islamic Organizations in Central Java & the Special Region of Yogyakarta” published by the SETARA Institute in 2012. This report provides an in-depth analysis of the historical roots, current dynamics, and the relationships and transformations of local radical Islamic groups in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta as they metamorphosed into terrorist groups.

Based on the hypothesis that intolerance is the starting point of terrorism and terrorism is the culmination of intolerance, this study combines a public perception survey (of 1,200 respondents) with qualitative research. This report highlights a number of local radical organizations (such as the Islamic Jihad Front/FJI, the Surakarta Islamic Militia/LUIS, and the Jundullah Militia) and traces the institutional and individual transformations of their leaders (such as Sigit Qardhawi and Joko Jihad), who shifted from an anti-vice movement to an armed terrorist network. In the concluding section, this document provides strategic recommendations to broaden the scope of deradicalization so that it targets not only former terrorist inmates but also radical groups and vulnerable communities through educational approaches, economic empowerment, and counter-narratives.
