Summary

This document is a comprehensive study in e-book format published in September 2023 under the title “Normative Innovations for the Advancement of Business and Human Rights in Indonesia”. This book was compiled and published through a collaboration between SETARA Institute and Sustainable-Inclusive Governance Initiative (SIGI).

This book, which is viii + 185 pages long, examines the current status, roadmap, and commitments of the Indonesian government in adopting the principles of Business and Human Rights (BHR) as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The phrase “Normative Innovation” in the title refers to critical research findings indicating that the Indonesian government’s achievements and actions to date remain limited to the level of regulations, policies, and minimal normative commitments (basic to improving). However, the passage of the National Strategy on Business and Human Rights (Stranas BHAM) is seen as a strong operational foundation for gradually pushing the business sector to transition from mere voluntary participation to mandatory compliance in order to protect the rights of workers, indigenous peoples, and environmental sustainability.
