Expert Calls for Governance Revamp After DiCaprio`s Criticism

Release DateApril 1, 2016CategoryNews & CoverageShare

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Setara Institute sees that the government’s emotional response to actor Leonardo DiCaprio who criticized forest ecosystem destruction from oil palm business is a wrong, counterproductive move.

Business and Human Rights Resarcher of Setara Institute Raziv Barokah expressed that the government’s plan to deport the actor is a bad move. He went on that it contradicts Jokowi’s development agenda which focuses on forest and oil palm management in Indonesia.

“[Even] without the information from Leo, the public have already knew how bad forest governance in Indonesia is. Indonesia is failing in preserving ecosystem balance,” Raziv said in Jakarta, Friday, April 1, 2016.

Setara considered that Leo did not inform something new during his visit to Aceh last week. The government should have been more accommodating to the movie star’s visit.

“Findings from any party in relation to ecosystem and forest condition should be appreciated in constructing the basis for governance,” he said.
